Self-Reporting

Reporting is an important component of regulating chiropodists and podiatrists in Ontario. Reports alert COCOO to situations where a member may not be practising safely and allow COCOO to take appropriate steps to protect the public.

A member must self-report to COCOO if they:

• have been found guilty of any offence in any jurisdiction (except speeding or parking tickets);
• have been charged with any offence in any jurisdiction;
• have a finding of professional negligence and/or malpractice;
• have a finding of professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity or any similar finding, in relation to the practice of chiropody or any other profession in any jurisdiction; and/or
• are the subject of a current complaint, investigation, inquiry or proceeding for professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity or any similar investigation or proceeding in relation to the practice of chiropody/podiatry or any other profession in any jurisdiction. (Note: Information about COCOO proceedings do not need not be reported.)

Failing to self-report is a serious matter and can result in referral to the Discipline Committee.

COCOO does not investigate every self-report received. COCOO’s Registrar reviews the self-report, determines what level of risk may be posed to the public, and makes a decision about an appropriate regulatory response.
